Duns secure second round spot in the Waddell Cup

Duns were at home to Kelso Thistle in the first round of the Waddell cup on Saturday and it was the home side who started brightly with the majority of possession in the opening 20 mins.

After 26 mins Duns Captain Sean Robertson managed to latch onto to a loose pass from the Kelso defence , following some nice interchanging play from fellow striker Sean Spoor he was able to strike low past the Kelso keeper.

Kelso reacted well and began to test the Duns defence however the back four of Bunyan, Simpson, Horne & Demarco stayed solid and nullified Kelso’s attempts to catch Duns on the break.

Duns then suffered a blow with in form midfielder Dylan Patterson suffering an ankle injury on 37 mins. Patterson was replace by new signing Dez Chisholm who himself returned after a year out with similar ankle injury.

In the latter stages of the half Kelso continued to fire long balls up to lone striker Chris Tait who managed to beat the Duns defence in the air, knocking the ball into the path of a supporting midfielder who hit the ball first time leaving Duns keeper Michael Thomson no chance.

1-1 into the break.

The Second half was a scrappy affair with Duns looking the biggest threat in attack. Duns made 4 more changes with Short, Hutchison, Ryan Burns & Duns debutante Andrew Tait coming on to add fresh legs to the mix. Duns began to get a grip on the game and finally made their pressure pay off with Robertson finishing well to grab himself a brace and securing Duns a place in the 2nd round.

Another win which see Duns continue their impressive winning streak still only having lost one game this season in league or cup games to date. Duns are back to league duties next week & travel to local rivals Coldstream on Saturday, having beaten them twice already this year, let’s hope it’s a hatrick of wins against the streamers in a matter of weeks.
