Duns secure another 3 pts on the road

Duns were away to Hawick Legion this Saturday on a cold and wet afternoon with a depleted squad due to injuries with a total of 7 defenders unavailable. However this didn’t stop Duns starting the better of the 2 sides.

Duns started on the front foot with the midfield of Ponton, Liddell and Patterson linking up well stretching the Hawick side creating a few chances early on. On the 25th minute Sean Spoor did well to hold up the ball only to be barged hard in the back and brought down for a Duns free kick. Sean Robertson stepped up and struck it low and hard which deflected off the Hawick defender leaving the keeper no chance.

Hawick threatened occasionally with some set plays and long throws but created little to trouble the Duns defence. The 3 man defence of Demarco, Brydon and Bunyan stood strong all day winning the majority the aerial duels.

Duns went into half time 1 nil up.

The second half was a very similar affair with Duns creating the most of the early chances. Spoor and Robertson both came close but the Hawick keeper did well to stop them both.

It wasn’t long before Robertson broke through again, following some great play by Bunyan and substitute Short down the right, Robertson calmly slotted the ball low into the corner of the net.

Hawick then responded well and began to play long to try and get back into the game. A loose ball broke to a Hawick midfielder who struck a Roberto Carlos esque shot from all of 35 yards which cannoned off the post only to fall into the path of the Hawick winger who hit it first time leaving Dixon no chance in the Duns goal.

Duns then battled hard to deal with the long balls from Hawick who at this point had thrown their centre half up front to form a front three to try and push for an equaliser. This left Hawick very susceptible to the counter attack and following a Hawick corner Duns were able to clear and break free with Ross Hutchison out running the Hawick right back then playing a lovely ball across the face of the goal serving it on a plate for the arriving Patterson to slot home and seal the 3 points for Duns.

Hawick Legion 1 – Duns FC 3

Overall a great team performance today with an important win to keep the promotion push alive.

Duns hope the injury list shortens and more players are available for next weeks game at home to Newtown.
