Duns progress to Quarter Final

Saturday saw Duns and St Boswells try for the fourth time to fulfil their Waddell Cup tie.
After a week of hit or miss weather it was decided the fixture would be switched to Gavinton.

Duns stated the game playing up the slightly damp and sunny Gavinton pitch, and hit the ground running.
Within 2 mins of KO Duns were one up when Lackenby’s cross found Hutchison who squared the ball to Liddell on the edge of the 6 yard box to fire low past the keeper.

The remainder of the first half was played in the middle of the park each team creating a couple of chance a piece. Duns were hoping to get to the half time whistle one goal to the good.

However with a couple of mins of the half to go Duns were undone with a ball that split the defence to find the Boswells striker one on one with Riach, who was unable to stop the striker firing low and hard into the back of the net.

Duns were again the quickest out the blocks after the start of the second half.
With barely 5 mins away Ponton collected the ball 20 yards out skipped past Boswells back line slide and slid the ball past the oncoming keeper to put Duns 2 – 1 up.

Duns added to their momentum and their goal tally just over 5 mins later.
Robertsons cross from the left was met by an unmark Burns, who jumped unusually high for the wee man to header past the diving keeper.

Like the first half the majority of the second was played in the centre of the park, both teams feeling each other out with no stick on chances.

That was until the 70th when the Duns keeper was penalised for a bizarre goalkeeper double “possession” rule that many a player and supporter were baffled by.

Boswells took their chance from the free kick with a rocket off the bar giving the Duns keeper no chance.

Duns put the game to bed and sealed their place in the next round with 15 mins of play left.
Burns was again left unmarked in the box to jump freely and head into the top corner.

Duns will now have an away tie against Langholm Legion in the quarter final of the Waddell Cup.
