Early exit from the South Cup for Duns

Duns played host to C Division Berwick Colts on Saturday in the South of Scotland cup.

With Duns on a 2 game win streak against a Berwick team that have gone 7 games without defeat it was set to be a hard fought Border Derby.

Berwick were out the blocks the quickest when a corner fell to a Berwick forward who was only stopped by a reaction save from the Duns keeper.Barely minutes had passed when Berwick had a penalty appeal turned down much to the annoyance of the Berwick bench.

Duns thought they had taken the lead 15 mins in when Bunyan’s half volley nestled into the net only for the Ref to pull it back for an offside decision. The deadlock was finally broken after 20 mins when a half cleared shot fell to a Berwick players feet, he squared it for the Berwick forward rifle it past the Duns keeper who could do nothing to stop it.

The next 15 mins saw Duns have the better chance with Spoor hitting the crossbar and an unmarked Renton narrowly missing with a header for a corner.

With Duns in control it was only a matter of time before they pegged their visitors back and the equaliser came after 35 mins in spectacular style. Ponton curled a free kick from 30 yds round the wall and into the top corner leave the keeper no chance.

Berwick had the best of the chance in the lead up to half time when I cross form the edge of the box tipped by the keeper onto the feet of the striker who was beaten by the bounce and blasted his shot onto the bar from 3 yds out.

Berwick again started the best from the kick off and had the first chance of the second half when Berwick’s centre midfielder was sent through on goal only to have his shot well blocked by Riach in the Duns goal. Minutes later a through ball again saw the Berwick midfielder one on one with the keeper luckily for Duns he blasted his shot over the bar.

After those chance Berwick didn’t have to wait long to regain the lead when a good passing move a Berwick sub who fired a low effort in passed the Duns keeper.

A reshuffle saw Duns go 3 at the back in search of the equaliser, however it wasn’t to  when a loose ball from a Duns attack saw Berwick break on the counter and a long ball forward saw the Berwick striker with only the keeper to beat fired low and hard form the penalty spot to put the tie out of reach from the home side.

Duns had a chance in stoppage time to claw on goal back when Baker fired just wide with a great effort but after a hard fought contest it was Berwick Colts that progressed to the next round.

Duns would like to wish Berwick Colts all the best in the next round when the take on A Division champions Chirnside.
